SEVERALLS Hospital has 1,825 beds, and fairly recently was divided into a geriatric unit, and five units consisting of two wards and two villas each, with a total of some 750 beds. In spite of repeated advertisements for trained psychiatric social workers over several years, no applications had been received. At the end of 1960 the hospital authorities decided to appoint untrained social workers who would be attached to the consultant psychiatrist and his team consisting of two other doctors, an assistant matron, and assistant chief male nurse working on each
